Rule: Article A is used before a word beginning with a consonant sound.
Ex:

  • He is a European.
  • He has a brief case.
  • She has a bicycle.

 

Rule: Article An is used before a word beginning with a vowel sound.
Ex:

  • He is an MLA
  • He has an umbrella
